A  ($)   means that the site either charges for listings, or charges for clickthroughs. Such sites are always manual submissions.

A  (M)   indicates that manual submission is required; there are several reasons why this may be so:

• Major Indexes are manual submissions because hand-tailoring submissions to these indexes is a must for optimum results.
  
• If a General Indexes is a manual submission, this means either that the site does not accept automatic submissions.
  
• Special Indexes are typically manual submissions because they are so specific to a particular interest that most people don't need to submit to more than 1 or 2 of them.
